BRAC University, a leading private university in Bangladesh, is known for its commitment to excellence in education, research, and community engagement. With a rapidly growing student body, faculty, and administrative ecosystem, the university’s digital presence plays a critical role in delivering information, facilitating academic processes, and supporting student life.
Recognizing that the existing website was falling short in terms of usability and accessibility, we initiated a comprehensive UI/UX redesign project. The goal was to transform the digital experience for current and prospective students, faculty, staff, and other stakeholders.
The Problem
The previous BRAC University website was cluttered, difficult to navigate, and failed to meet the information needs of its users effectively. To validate and explore user pain points, we conducted an extensive user survey with over 800+ participants, including students, faculty, and administrative staff.
The survey results highlighted several recurring issues:
- Difficulty in accessing the BRAC University library and its resources.
- Lack of clear and updated information regarding faculty members and staff.
- Confusing and scattered details about tuition fees, payment procedures, and financial obligations.
- Inaccessibility of contact details of departments and administrative offices.
- Lack of structured content about academic programs, institutes, and research opportunities.
- Absence of a centralized faculty/staff directory.
- Inadequate visibility of career opportunities, internships, and job placements.
- Unclear information about important academic dates, admissions, and academic departments.
Users consistently expressed frustration over the poor site architecture, redundant information, and lack of intuitive navigation.
The Solution
To address these challenges, we adopted a user-centered design approach. The key steps of our solution included:
- Information Architecture Overhaul: We restructured the site’s content hierarchy to reflect the actual mental models of students and faculty. Core sections such as Academics, Admissions, Research, Campus Life, and Career Services were clearly segmented.
- User Journey Mapping: Based on survey responses, we mapped out primary user journeys (e.g., prospective student looking for admission info, current student checking tuition fees, staff looking for library resources) to ensure streamlined access to desired content.
- Smart Navigation & Search: We introduced a simplified navigation menu and a powerful search function that enabled users to find key information quickly.
- Content Consolidation: Duplicate and outdated content was removed. Information about faculty, departments, and research was centralized and made easily accessible.
- Responsive UI Design: A modern, mobile-friendly interface was designed, ensuring accessibility across devices.
- Interactive Elements: We added interactive sections for FAQs, tuition calculators, academic calendars, and a contact directory to reduce friction.
The Result
The redesigned BRAC University website delivered a dramatically improved user experience. Key outcomes included:
- Enhanced discoverability: 90% of beta users reported they could now find what they were looking for within 3 clicks.
- Increased engagement: Average session duration increased by 45%, indicating improved content relevance and usability.
- Reduced support queries: Administrative offices noted a significant drop in repetitive information requests related to tuition fees, admissions, and faculty details.
- Positive user feedback: Follow-up surveys showed an 87% satisfaction rate with the new UI/UX design.
This redesign not only aligned the digital experience with BRAC University's academic excellence but also empowered users with clear, accessible, and actionable information — helping them make more informed decisions and enhancing their overall engagement with the university.
